Google’s Chrome Browser Trial By Fire

by cindy ~ September 8th, 2008

Google's Chrome BrowserGood News Travels Fast, Bad News Travels Faster, and it seems that there is plenty of bad news going around about Google’s browser “Chrome”. So far it has been attacked for it’s Terms and Conditions, a vulnerability that allowed hackers to force Chrome to crash, Privacy issues, being disguised as legitimate spyware, and now they are encouraging users to update because an attacker could gain access through Chrome and apparently have control of the PC possibly executing other code on the machine.

Most news sites are carrying stories about Chrome’s problems. Germany’s prime time news Tagesschau announced the following:

The Federal Office for Information Security warned internet users of the new browser Chrome. The application by the company Google should not be used for surfing the internet, as a spokesperson for the office told the Berliner Zeitung. It was said to be problematic that Chrome was distributed as an unfinished advance version. Furthermore it was said to be risky that user data is hoarded with a single vendor. With its search engine, email program and the new browser, Google now covers all important areas on the internet.

Personally, Chrome hasn’t turned me on. I was rather put off by the amount of hype about it. I have seen plenty of good browsers come and go. Some gain popularity, some have a small following, yet for some unknown reason everyone was downloading Chrome as soon as it got announced. I’ve heard comments about it’s speed, but I remember when Phoenix and Opera were lightning fast, until users bored of it and wanted more functionality, then they got heavier and heavier. The same will happen with Chrome if it survives it’s trial by fire.

Microsoft’s Offbase with Seinfield Commerical

by cindy ~ September 7th, 2008

Microsofts efforts to compete against Apple’s library of commercials that poke fun at Vista and Microsoft operating systems, has fallen flat on its face. If you blink you miss the big punchline that you wait for to discover what the ad is for. If this was their best effort, then like their operating systems… they need to go back to the drawing board.

The $10 million that Seinfeld was reportedly paid for the commercial would have served Microsoft better if they just threw it into Times Square!

I don’t think Apple have anything to worry about with any threat to their Mac versus PC series of commercials. Now if they can just bring the prices down so that people can take advantage of the hype!
